Restaurant Review

BY MADELINE TAYLOR

When I was in Los Angeles I visited a restaurant called Horses in West Hollywood and boy did it not disappoint. Horses opened last fall on Sunset Boulevard with a Yves Klein blue facade that hides a warren of cozy, lived-in dining rooms and wooden bars. The restaurant itself encapsulates that low-key feel. It was designed as a hangout spot to escape the chaos that is Los Angeles. For the most part, the kitchen has a gift for making both the service and food seem bright, effortless and charismatic.

I first had the cheeseburger and the flavours were mouthwatering. You can get a cheeseburger practically anywhere, but they do it so well at Horses. The hand-rolled patty with the black seed toasted bun elevates all the flavours and you can tell that everything is homemade.

The smoked salmon lavish was the perfect pallet cleanser. You can really taste that the salmon was fresh and just melted in your mouth. I’ve always been a fan of smoked salmon since we are so spoiled with seafood here in Vancouver so I always put different cities up to the seafood test, and Horses passed that test!

Spicy rigatoni is an absolute must wherever I go. It doesn’t matter the city or time of day, I’m always going to choose it. You really can’t beat a dish that is creamy and spicy all in one mouthful. Horses did an excellent job for this dish, although basic, but I would get it again.

We ended the night off with this fluffy, vanilla bean cheesecake paired with peaches. Cheesecake is such a simple yet delicious dessert and I always love ending my night off with a sweet treat. I loved the crust on the bottom as it tasted like a sugar cookie.
